What is Curanderismo and Can It Harm Children?

Curanderismo is folk medicine that is an important and common aspect of Hispanic culture and its use is often associated with spiritual and psychic healing. Several physicians at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey recently published a case study in Pediatric Emergency Care. The article details the health consequences to a 4-year old Mexican child who developed systemic toxicity after being exposed to an isopropyl alcohol and chamomile preparation during a curanderismo ritual.
