An educational program of the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition, text4baby provides pregnant women and new moms with information to help them care for their health and give their babies the best possible start in life. Women who sign up for the service by texting BABY to 511411 (or BEBE in Spanish) will receive free SMS text messages each week, timed to their due date or their baby’s date of birth.

Smoking Early in Pregnancy Raises Risk of Heart Defects in Infants

Maternal cigarette smoking in the first trimester was associated with a

20 to 70 percent greater likelihood that a baby would be born with

certain types of congenital heart defects, according to a study by the

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Congenital heart defects are

the most common type of birth defects, contributing to approximately 30

percent of infant deaths from birth defects annually. Learn more about smoking early in pregnancy and risk of heart defects.

UCLA is currently seeking prenatally exposed teens between ages 13-18 to
participate in a six week research study on coping with daily struggles
and alcohol use.
